Celebrating 50 Years of the Rehabilitation Act

September 26, 2023 marks a significant milestone in our journey toward equality and accessibility – the 50th Anniversary of the Rehabilitation Act!

Half a century ago, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was signed into law, ensuring that people with disabilities have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else. It's been a long and inspiring journey filled with advocacy, resilience, and progress. Learn about Sections of the Act from the Department of Labor’s Rehabilitation Act 50 blog series:

  • Section 501 prohibits discrimination against qualified individuals with disabilities in federal employment.
  • Section 503 mandates affirmative action and non-discrimination in employment practices by federal contractors and subcontractors.
  • Section 504 prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities by programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance. Watch a video from Ohio Governor Mike DeWine in honor of the special anniversary.
  • Section 508 focuses on making electronic and information technology accessible to people with disabilities.

Let's take a moment to reflect on the incredible strides we've made and the countless individuals who have dedicated their lives to this cause. Together, we've broken down barriers, shattered stereotypes, and paved the way for a more inclusive Ohio.

As we celebrate this historic moment, let's also remember that the work is far from over. Let's continue to champion inclusivity, accessibility, and equal opportunities for all. Let's build on the legacy of the Rehabilitation Act and keep striving for a more accessible, equitable future.
