Celebrating Inclusion: National Disability Employment Awareness Month 2024
National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is observed every October to highlight the contributions of workers with disabilities and promote inclusive employment practices. This year marks the 78th anniversary of this significant observance.
NDEAM originated in 1945 as "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week." In 1962, the name was updated to reflect the inclusion of all types of disabilities, and in 1988, it was expanded from a week to a full month.
In Ohio, Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) is leading the benefits of hiring individuals with disabilities. Throughout October, OOD is hosting hiring events to connect job seekers with employer partners.
OOD Director Kevin L. Miller shares insights in this NDEAM video, emphasizing OOD's commitment to Ohioans with disabilities.
Additionally, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine and Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted have issued a proclamation in support of NDEAM. For further details on Ohio's initiatives, please read OOD's 2024 NDEAM press release.
