International Day of People with Disabilities: Celebrating Inclusion and Empowerment
Every year on December 3rd, we commemorate the International Day of People with Disabilities, a day to recognize the incredible achievements, resilience, and contributions of individuals with disabilities. In Ohio, this commitment to inclusion was powerfully demonstrated when Governor DeWine signed Executive Order 2019-03D, establishing Ohio as a Disability Inclusion State and Model Employer of Individuals with Disabilities1.
OOD understands that employment is a transformative force for independence and community engagement. Work does more than provide income—it offers:
- A sense of purpose
- Economic self-sufficiency
- Community involvement
- Opportunities for personal growth
The 2023 theme, "Amplifying the leadership of people with disabilities for an inclusive and sustainable future," highlights a critical message: individuals with disabilities are not just participants, but essential leaders in creating a more equitable world.
By celebrating this day, we reaffirm our commitment to breaking down barriers and supporting every Ohioan’s contribution.
