How Shawn Overcame Barriers to Achieve a Career in Welding

Shawn Stover had a clear aspiration: to build a successful career in welding, a field that not only matches his skills but also fuels his passion. He wanted to achieve financial stability to support his family while exploring the artistic aspects of the trade.
However, Shawn faced significant challenges. Alongside his desire for a fulfilling career, he struggled with self-direction, which is common among individuals with severe and persistent mental health disabilities. Days could be tough; on bad mental health days, he found it difficult to get out of bed and stay motivated toward his goals.
With the guidance of Dana Young, Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), Shawn found the support he needed to navigate his challenges. Combining career services with mental health recovery helped Shawn define his goal and take actionable steps toward achieving it.
The plan was comprehensive and focused on Shawn's unique needs:
- Conduct a vocational evaluation to identify his strengths and interests.
- Enroll him in occupational skills training for welding at Portage Lakes Career Center.
- Provide on-the-job support and follow-up to ensure retention and success in his role.
“I've always been interested in welding but never knew how I would switch over and get into that profession,” Shawn explained.
Following the outlined plan, Shawn completed his welding training and secured a job at Canton Elevator Company, where he has thrived.
“What I like most about my job is that I'm doing something I love and being able to provide for my family while doing it. I enjoy waking up in the morning where I can be the father that my daughters deserve—it truly means the world to me to know that I'm able to give my family the life they deserve,” Shawn said.
“I feel lucky to have had a front-row seat to witness Shawn’s determination to create a new story and direction for himself,” explained Dana. “I hope he is incredibly proud of his accomplishments.”
